Successful entrepreneurs never stop learning and growing both their business and themselves. Having good systems in place to help manage your business is only half the battle. The other half consists of your leadership skills to drive yourself and your employees to embrace the vision of your company. Knowing the difference between management and leadership will be one of the biggest challenges one will face as an entrepreneur. Both skills will be needed to ensure the smooth operation of your business. Businesses in the past have failed due to both lack of leadership and poor management skills within the company. It is in your best interest and that of the business to combine both strong leadership and strong management skills so you can use them to balance each other.

Here's a short list of how one can bridge both leadership and management skills that are often needed to take your business to the next level.

1. As a leader one needs to set the direction (the vision) of the company or business. Setting the direction of the company is often confused with budgeting and planning, which is the role of the manager. If you are inclined to do both, you will do well.

2. Do you know the difference between aligning your people and staffing them? Managers organize their staff to complete a certain task, while leaders align their people according to their unique talents so they can be empowered. Organizing people into a position or role simply to complete a task most often do not empower them, yet it is necessary.

3. Leaders know how to motivate their people, whereas managers more often than not play the role of controlling and problem solving. Leaders realize the need to generate highly energized behavior in the workplace; this ensures that their people will be more enthusiastic to overcome challenges when they arise. Managers are often stuck with the job of maintaining the systems and structures of a business. Their objective is to help ensure employees complete the routine tasks successfully on a day-to-day basis. It's nothing exciting, just your basic grunge work that needs to be done.

These are the common leadership traits and managerial skills that are needed to run and take your business to the next level. It can become quite overwhelming, that is why we need to be honest with ourselves and know what our own strengths and weakness are. As an entrepreneur, we need to come to terms with our own inabilities to do everything on our own. Often entrepreneurs must use their better judgment to hire others who are more equipped to help in the areas where they lack when it comes to management and leadership skills. This in no way should excuse one from the continual learning of minding one's own business. In fact, it will only allow them the opportunity to focus on other areas of their business that will need attention.
